I needed a working lunch and China Doll delivered a delicious Hunan Chicken plate (see pic) ordered from the menu! Even though this place has opted to keep closed (due to COVID obviously) what I think is Mobile's best quality self-serve Chinese, I encourage any fan to take advantage of these strange times and do something as unpredictable as 2020 itself has been...order from the menu at a buffet! I've ordered from China Dolls menu for dinner and now lunch and it is really yummy. It was fun to describe what I was in the mood for and have my server talk about which dishes would satisfy that flavir profile. I learned more then if self serving at the buffet! On this visit I had some wonton soup and Hunan Shrimp. It was very delicious with big tender shrimp and perfectly cooked veggies including carrot, broccoli and snow peas. Fried rice and spring roll were nice as well.
I cringe at almost all Chinese buffets in Mobile. They are never worth the price, the food is usually subpar and disappointing to me. I humor my husband on occasion, and will pick around what I will tolerate. However, we stopped by China Doll today for the first time in many years. I use to order off the menu when I worked next door years ago, and remembered it being pretty good. I suggested it to chalk one up for hubby. It was amazing. We met the current chef. He worked here years ago and is training the new folks. There was a pork belly potato dish that was amazing, the pepper steak, and various chicken dishes were great. Hands down best egg foo young I have ever eaten. The pork buns were fire! If you haven't tried China Doll in a while, Mobile, it's time to come back!
